THE NEW YORK STATE AREA HEALTH EDUCATION CENTER (AHEC)
DATA RESOURCE CENTER
The Data Resource Center was established in 2001 to provide New York State socio-demographic, health, educational, and workforce data to AHEC centers and partner organizations. Our data sets are comprehensive and regularly updated. We have data for counties, ZIP codes, census tracts, minor civil divisions, Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), Medically Underserved Areas, legislative districts, and school districts. We can provide customized tables, maps and analyses to meet your needs.
Examples of Services We Offer
If you are applying for a HPSA designation,
we have have complete census data that can be used to construct a socio-demographic profile of the area in which you are interested. We have software that can
define areas that are covered in a specified driving time or distance based on the actual
types of roads that originate from the center of the proposed HPSA service area.
We can also provide finished professional maps to accompany your HPSA
application.
If you are a rural health network and want to do a community health plan, we have in addition to the resources above, a current masterfile of over 3500 health facilities, including, but not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic and treatment centers and home health programs.
If you are a community health center or a hospital or a public health department considering opening an extension clinic we can tell you the age, race, ethnicity, and income status of the population within a specified drive time from the proposed site, as well as the locations of health care providers currently within the area.
If you are a medical school we can tell you about the communities in which your graduates are practicing- Health Professional Shortage Area, Medically Underserved Area, rural/urban area, low income or poverty area - anywhere in the United States.
If you are a higher educational institution we can identify the socio-demographics of the communities from which your students come.
We can provide access to the AHEC Data Warehouse, a comprehensive internet based data resource that contains health, socio-demographic, educational and health workforce tables and maps that can be easily downloaded by the user. Much of the data are at the ZIP code, census tract and minor civil division levels making the data particularly useful for community analyses.
